Our New Patient Exam and every subsequent exam includes a comprehensive Oral Cancer Screening.   There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to oral cancer. One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol, a long term historic problem and cause, and the other is through exposure to the HPV-16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16), a newly identified etiology, and the same one which is responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers in women.

    At times physicians and dentists recommend that a patient take antibiotics before certain dental procedures. This is called “antibiotic prophylaxis.”  Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for a small number of people who have specific heart conditions and antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines also have been developed for people who have orthopedic implants such as artificial joints.  But why do healthcare providers suggest this extra step?  Who is at risk?  In 2012, the ADA and American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons updated the recommendations for taking premedication.  Why the change?  The ADA has provided a website to answer these questions and more at www.mouthhealty.org.
